Ready for primary election

It’s time again for Ohioans to begin considering candidates, issues and levies ahead of the March 19 primary. This year, candidates are vying for positions all the way up to the headline-grabbing presidential race. But as always, local residents must become educated and choose carefully when it comes to the races here that likely will have a greater impact on their everyday lives.

Those who are eligible have until Tuesday to register to vote. But simply registering is not enough. Learning about and understanding the people and issues on the ballot is essential. Once a voter is informed, the next step is to show up and vote.

Early in-person absentee voting begins Feb. 21.

Applications for absentee ballots to be mailed for the primary must be received by boards of elections by the close of business March 12.

And then, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 19, polls will be open in the precincts.

Don’t know where you’re supposed to vote? Head to your county board of elections’ website for precinct and polling location information. Watch your mailbox, too, in case there is a postcard heading your way to indicate a change in polling place from the last election.

Don’t leave these critical decisions to others. Make sure yours is among the voices that helps determine the fate of us all.

The key here is to be prepared with information. Know where and when you can vote, and know for whom or on what you are voting. Don’t vote based on name recognition alone. Throw your support behind the candidates who will do the best job representing and serving his or her constituents. Support the issues and levies that will mean the most for lifting our communities.

Above all, remember no one can see how you cast your ballot. Social media bluster aside, once you get behind that screen, your decisions are between you and the voting machine. Cast the vote that is right for you, your family, your school or community, your state and your country.
