Today’s festivities remind us of our nation’s freedoms

Take a moment today to remember that, despite whatever differences we have, there are few nations in the world where citizens are able to gather to celebrate the freedoms that residents of the United States of America too often taken for granted.

It’s an important thought as our nation today celebrates its 246th birthday.

The Fourth of July is a true national holiday, one that is celebrated from the smallest township to the largest city. It’s a day of picnics, family gatherings, parades and summer fun, all played out against the backdrop of American flags and patriotic music. More often than not, the day ends with a fireworks display.

Communities throughout our region are ready to celebrate.

Parades and festivals have been occurring all weekend. More festivities and fireworks celebrations will continue today.

Among them, Howland Township will host a parade at 10 a.m. today, followed by entertainment, food and music at Richard Orwig Park.

Newton Falls will host its 76th annual parade at 10 a.m. today, followed by a festival at the park off Quarry Street. Fireworks are scheduled for 10 p.m. this evening.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers will host fireworks after the game tonight, in honor of Niles Appreciation Day.

In Warren, the Packard Band will present an 8 p.m. concert on the Music Hall’s south lawn along Mahoning Avenue NW, followed by fireworks.

Austintown Township’s annual holiday parade steps off at noon today.

Canfield also will host its annual parade at 10 a.m. today.

And many other communities are hosting festivities, as listed in today’s newspaper.

While the Independence Day holiday is a reason to celebrate, we hope that everyone will take a moment to remember the thousands of American men and women who are standing guard around the world as members of our armed forces.

Their sacrifices and vigilance ensure that future generations of Americans will continue to enjoy the freedoms we do today.

We hope you will attend an Independence Day celebration today.

Marvel at the fireworks.

Thank a service man or woman for his or her service.

But most of all, enjoy being an American.
