Former majority owner of Canadiens dies at 87

MONTREAL (AP) — George Gillett Jr., who was a former majority owner of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and part owner of soccer’s Liverpool FC, has died. He was 87. The Canadiens confirmed Gillett’s death in a release Wednesday. No cause of death was given. Gillett bought the Bell Centre, then the Molson Centre, and a majority stake in the Canadiens for $275 million on Jan. 31, 2001, with the help of $140 million in loans from two banks and the Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec, the province’s pension fund manager. Bob Pettit, imposing Hawks great and first NBA MVP, dies

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Bob Pettit, an imposing scorer and rebounder for the St. Louis Hawks and winner of the NBA’s first Most Valuable Player award in 1956, has died. He was 93. Pettit’s alma mater, LSU, announced Thursday that he died a day earlier. The university did not provide a cause of death. Pettit was an All-American at LSU before going on to the NBA, where he was an All-Star for each of his 11 seasons, all with the Hawks.
