John T. Remias 1934-2026

John Remias

AUSTINTOWN - John T. Remias, 92, of Austintown, passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 31, 2026, after a brief illness, leaving a legacy of teaching, service, friendship and devotion.

An educator, coach, veteran and dedicated Mason, John touched many lives through his commitment to helping others learn and succeed.

Born in 1934 to John and Anna Kubic Remias, John later went on to graduate from Chaney High School and then continued his education at Youngstown State University, where he played football.

John was in the Army and stationed at Fort Knox in Kentucky. His commitment to service continued through his involvement in the American Legion, where he served as chairman of the Buckeye Boys State Committee, helping young people learn about citizenship and government.

John devoted 33 years to the Youngstown City Schools, teaching at both East and Chaney High School before retiring in 1987. As a history and political science teacher, he worked to help students understand government and their place within it.

Among the most meaningful parts of John's teaching career was meeting Margaret (Peggy) Schnurrenberger, a fellow teacher who became his wife 65 years ago on July 8, 1961. Together, they enjoyed traveling, gardening, volunteering, and spending time with their families.

John also shared a close relationship with his sister, Anne and her husband, Tom Olsen, and many nieces and nephews.

John brought that same dedication to the basketball court, serving as a head basketball coach for five years. Remembered as a "teaching coach," he emphasized instruction, hard work and respect, regardless of the final score. Saturday practices followed Friday-night games, but there were always doughnuts afterward -- a thoughtful tradition he also shared with friends at the Masonic Temple. His contributions earned recognition from the Youngstown City Council, three Freedom Foundation Awards, and the George Washington Outstanding Teacher Award. In 1998, he was inducted into the Chaney Athletic Hall of Fame.

After retirement, he continued supporting students through the Chaney High Foundation and its scholarship committee, and he worked part-time at Youngstown State University supervising student teachers.

Freemasonry held a special place in John's life. A member of Argus Lodge No. 545, he was raised a Master Mason on June 5, 1959, and was later honored with the Thirty-Third Degree of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of the Masonic Learning Center.

John found pleasure in the outdoors, whether tending the yard on his John Deere or fishing with family in Canada. One memorable fishing trip with his brother-in-law, Don, produced a muskie so large that the two placed it in their cabin's bathtub. Such stories became treasured reminders of the experiences and laughter shared with him.

John will be remembered for the lessons he taught, the students and players he encouraged, and the friendships he maintained.

Calling Hours will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the Austintown Community Church, 242 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown, with services beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Memorial contributions can be made in John's memory to the Austintown Community Church.

Arrangements for Mr. Remias are being provided by the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave., Austintown.
