William Proverbs

HENDERSON, Nev. -- William A. "Bill" Proverbs passed away peacefully in his sleep on Aug. 24, 2026, at the age of 94, at his home in Henderson, Nevada.

Bill was born on Sept. 19, 1931, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of the late William and Cora Graham Proverbs. He was preceded in death by his brother, James M. Proverbs, and sister, Shirley Welsh Lewis.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia Scott Proverbs. He also leaves sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Paul) Schneider and Marjorie Theophilus; 11 nieces and nephews; and 10 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, who will forever cherish memories of their Uncle Bill.

One of his many passions throughout his life was baseball. He pitched in the Cleveland Indians organization from 1950 to 1956. After an arm injury brought his baseball career to an early end, Bill proudly served in the United States Army.

Upon returning to civilian life, Bill continued his education at Hiram College, earning his bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 1958. He received his master's degree in education in 1962 from Kent State University. Bill remained at Hiram College as head coach of the baseball and volleyball programs and as an assistant coach in football and basketball. After 31 years he retired.

Bill's dedication to athletics and education earned him many honors throughout his life. Among his proudest achievements were his inductions into the Chaney High School Hall of Fame, the Hiram College Hall of Fame and the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame. Another honor was the renaming of Robert O. Fishel Field to Fishel Field at Proverbs Park in Hiram.

His influence extended beyond the playing field, and the relationships he built with his players were a source of great pride and joy. Many remained in contact with him throughout their adult lives.

Outside of baseball and coaching, Bill enjoyed playing golf and painting. His oil paintings became cherished gifts to family and friends, with many proudly displayed on their walls as lasting reminders of his creativity and generosity.

William was truly blessed throughout his 94 years. He lived a life filled with family, friendship, baseball, coaching, creativity and countless memories. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill's family would like to thank ProCare Hospice of Nevada for their loving care during Bill's illness.

Interment will take place at a later date at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
