Ruth E. Gresh

YOUNGSTOWN - Ruth Eleanor Gresh, 100, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026.

She affectionately was known as “Mom,” “Gran,” “GiGi,” and, perhaps most fittingly, “Short 'n Sassy,” Ruth was a remarkable woman whose larger-than-life personality, unwavering determination, and unmistakable spunk left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Small in stature but mighty in spirit, she lived her 100 years with fierce independence, an extraordinary work ethic, an adventurous heart and just the right amount of sass.

Born in Campbell, Ruth called Youngstown home, even having lived also in Florida and California throughout her lifetime. She embraced life’s adventures with enthusiasm and curiosity, enjoying travel both across the United States and internationally. Her love of exploring new places and experiencing different cultures was just one reflection of her vibrant spirit and zest for life.

A woman who was never one to sit still, Ruth worked tirelessly and remained remarkably active well into her later years. Following her retirement from Super X, she simply wasn’t ready to slow down. With her continued appreciation for fashion and with her unmistakable sense of style, Ruth began working part-time at Macy’s Department Store, allowing her to remain connected to the fashion world she so enjoyed. Her remarkable work ethic, independence and determination were qualities she carried with her throughout her life.

Even as life eventually began to slow her down, her devotion to family never wavered. Family gatherings were among her greatest joys, and she made every effort to be present -- savoring each opportunity to celebrate, laugh and simply be together. To Ruth, family was everything.

Together with her husband, John, Ruth raised five children, Jackie (Tom) Winant, Vivian (Bob) Smith, Barbara (Rick) Thomae, Jim (Karen) Gresh, and Duane (Terri) Gresh. Her legacy of love continues through her grandchildren, Kechina (Rob), Duane (Adrienne), Reyna (Pete), Reagan (Tommy), Audra (Chris), Jacob, Liz (Dennis), and one beloved grandson who preceded her in death, Nate (Janet); and 11 great-grandchildren, Harmony, Declan, Phoebe, Aiden, Beckham, Elia, Tanner, Jillian, Ethan, Owen and Izzy. Mom/Gran/GiGi was a constant source of strength, laughter and encouragement. She celebrated accomplishments, supported dreams, shared treasured traditions and, when necessary, offered a little of that famous “Short n Sassy” wisdom. Her love was unwavering, but she was never shy about reminding those she cherished of the importance of staying on the right path.

Ruth also leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as many dedicated and loving friends.

Her kitchen was another place where her love truly shined. An exceptional baker and cook, Ruth was especially famous for her delicious homemade kiffles and kolachi, along with her unforgettable chicken noodle soup and halupki. She appreciated the simple pleasures in life, including a good cup of coffee, a generous helping of salt, and, without exception, REAL butter. Some things were simply nonnegotiable, and Ruth wasn’t shy about letting anyone know it.

Her dedication extended beyond her family and into her church, Zion Lutheran Church in Cornersburg, where she faithfully gave her time and talents through volunteer work and active participation.

Her appreciation for beauty and culture was reflected in her love of Asian décor, one of the many distinctive touches that made her uniquely herself.

Those rejoicing with her in Heaven include her husband, John; siblings, Marian (John) Dunchak, Delores "Dee" Forgac, Ernie (Joanne) Forgac, and Jeannie (Mike) DeRose; as well as grandson, Nate, and partner in crime, Marge Troll.

Above all, Ruth will be remembered for her infectious laughter, her fierce loyalty and the unwavering encouragement she offered those she loved. She was everyone’s biggest cheerleader, celebrating their successes and supporting their dreams while never hesitating to offer a little tough love when necessary. Her love was unconditional, her opinions were unmistakable, and her presence was unforgettable.

Family and friends are welcome to celebrate her exceptional life beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, with Pastor Duane Jesse officiating at Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44511, where a mercy luncheon will follow.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Diane and Ed Reese, the entire staff of The Inn at Christine Valley, and the staff of Crossroads Hospice for their ongoing love, support and care both shown and provided to Ruth.

One hundred years may seem like a lifetime, but for those who loved her, no amount of time could ever have been enough.

Though her remarkable journey on earth has come to an end, the lessons she taught, the traditions she created, the laughter she shared, and the love she so generously gave will continue through the generations blessed to call her family.

Small in stature. Mighty in spirit. Forever loved. Forever our Mom, our Gran, our GiGi, and our Short n Sassy: 100 Years of Love, Laughter, and a Little Sass.

Arrangements are being handled by Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland.
