Paul was born June 29, 1956, to the late William "Bud" and Viola Gottschall and was the youngest of six children.
During his youth, Paul was an avid player of basketball and tennis; however, his main love was pitching for the baseball team at Chaminade Julienne High School in Dayton. In his later years, his passions were research and playing the guitar.
Driven by an endless thirst for knowledge, Paul earned his doctorate in neuroendocrine physiology at Michigan State University, became an instructor and research assistant at Tulane University and followed that with a career as a professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He finished his working career at the Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine (UAMS). Dr. Gottschall's discoveries in Alzheimer's research received nearly $5 million in research funding during his career. On a national level, he gave more than 50 invited talks to a mix of academic institutions as well as industry divisions, including Parke-Davis, Pfizer, Abbott, Smith-Linke, Beecham (GlaxoSmithKline), and NIH workshops. Dr. Gottschall served on the NIH Clinical and Neuroimmunology and Brain Tumor Study section, reviewing over 300 NIH grants. Additionally, he was a reviewer for the MS Society, Welcome Trust Foundation, Alzheimer's Association, National Science Foundation, UK Stroke Association, and VA Administration, as well as other organizations and institutions.
Along with educating graduate students and SURF students, Dr. Gottschall served on numerous dissertation and qualifying exam committees. He mentored young faculty in the INBRE and COBRE programs and served as the course director of the UAMS Pharmacology Graduate programs for six years and as the director of department seminars for two years.
Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia of Poland; son, Peter of Little Rock, Arkansas; daughter, Elizabeth of Poland; and his siblings, William "Bill," Tom, Margaret, James "Jim” and Jerry, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
Reflecting on his journey of 70 years, we will remember his kindness, thoughtfulness and love as a husband and father. His unwavering spirit of perseverance was always punctuated by moments of laughter, which will never be forgotten.
