HOWELL, Mich. -- Martha June Barnes, 90, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2025, in Howell, Michigan.
Affectionately known as June, she was born Oct. 9, 1935, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Emery W. and Mary Litwin Barnes.
She was raised on a 100-acre farm in Ellsworth and was a 1953 graduate of Canfield High School. The day following high school graduation, June began employment as secretary to C. M. Johnson, superintendent of Canfield Local Schools. She remained there until 1956, when she married Lee C. McCluggage. Together, they were blessed and raised two children. As a result of her husband’s military assignments, there were many geographical moves throughout the United States. Her resume included an interesting variety of secretarial positions in the fields of insurance, banking, aerospace, a university president’s office and law.
On her return to the farmstead in Ohio in 1985, she was re-employed by the Canfield Local Schools, from which she retired in 2014.
June was a member of Canfield Christian Church. She enjoyed church outings, exchanging recipes, playing golf and planning high school class reunions.
Her family, however, was an utmost delight.
She leaves a son, Bruce R. and Mary Ellen McCluggage; a daughter, Denise A. McCluggage; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
June was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Kenneth; and her former husband.
June’s memorial will begin with visitation at 10 a.m., and a celebration of her life will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, at Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406.
In lieu of flowers, donate to the Canfield Christian Church or the Dementia Society of America.
