NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Joyce Dale Hvizdos passed away on her 90th birthday on Sept. 27, 2026, surrounded by her family at home.
Joyce was born Sept. 27, 1936, to parents Helen and Paul McWhorter in Gadsden, Alabama.
She graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1955. After graduation, she enlisted in the Army in the Women's Army Corps branch. While in the Army, Joyce was a great marksman and worked in the office typing the morning reports. She met her husband, John Hvizdos, while stationed in Fort Dix, New Jersey. After being discharged, they moved to New Middletown to begin their family.
Joyce is survived by her husband and her four children, John Hvizdos Jr. of New Philadelphia, James Hvizdos of Youngstown, Jacquelyn Hvizdos-Wolf of Texas and Jodi Berger of New Middletown. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Kelly Hvizdos, Tony Hvizdos, Christopher Wolf, Sarah Somerville, Greg Haylett and Ben Haylett; four great-grandchildren, Lydia, Emma, Caleb and Dawson; and her two sisters, Mary McWhorter and Debbie Brooks.
Joyce dedicated her life to raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren. She was an integral part in the lives of Sarah, Greg and Ben. She was a role model of resiliency and grit as she battled multiple chronic health issues for the past 10 years. She enjoyed reading, bird-watching and working in her flower garden.
Joyce donated her body to Cleveland Clinic to be used as a research cadaver for future medical students. She wanted this selfless act to provide scientific knowledge and medical experience to prepare students to become excellent doctors.
In her honor, Joyce has requested that instead of flowers, donations in her memory could be made to the Cleveland Clinic for COPD research.
The family will have a private celebration of life for Joyce.
