Josephine Appugliese 1934-2026

YOUNGSTOWN - Josephine K. Appugliese, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, at the Hospice House.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1934, in Youngstown, a daughter to the late Frank and Josephine Keca Kotsol.

She worked for General Electric for many years until her retirement.

Josephine was a longtime member of St. Brendan's and loved keeping busy and being around people. She was well known as a bingo lady, both calling and playing bingo, and she always enjoyed a trip to the casino or simply getting together with friends. In her younger years, she also enjoyed bowling.

Her family will tell you she was an amazing cook, and there were certain things she made that just won't be the same without her. Her kielbasa soup, green bean soup, kolachi, pizzelles and ribbon Jell-O were all family favorites. She also loved to crochet, making blankets, scarves and baby blankets for those around her. She enjoyed collecting things and had a lifelong love for animals, especially her dogs and cats.

Her grandchildren were especially important to her, and she was always there for them. If they had a sporting event, chances were she was there watching and cheering them on. She enjoyed the simple things - good food, good friends, her animals, and time with the people she loved - and those are the things her family will remember most.

Josephine is survived by her children, Josephine (Steve) Schurko and Ralph (Sherrie) Appugliese; her grandchildren, Corey (Justin Zebrak) Schurko, Tyler (Shayla) Schurko, Alyssa Suruga and Vincent Appugliese.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vincent Appugliese; and 14 brothers and sisters.

A private service was held for Josephine, and she was laid to rest with her husband in Calvary Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman.
