BESSEMER, Pa. - Gary A. Young, 86, of Bessemer, Pa., passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, at his home, after a brief illness, surrounded by his beloved family.
Gary was born Feb. 16, 1940, in New Castle, Pa., the son of Bernard Young and Betty Veltre.
He was a 1958 graduate of Bessemer High School. Following graduation, he served in the Navy from June 1958 through June 1962.
Gary retired from the Chessie System Railroad as a conductor in February 2001 after 33 years of service.
He loved to mow his grass, musky fish, meet his railroad friends at Panera for breakfast and meet his buddies at Pizza Joe’s in Bessemer for coffee every day.
Gary married Janice McCurdy Young on June 30, 1962, and they shared 64 years together.
He will be missed by his family: his daughters, Brenda (Stephen) Shaffer, Kelly (Bill) Bartels, and his son, Craig (Theresa) Young. His grandchildren: Joshua Shaffer, Justin (Teresa) Shaffer, Kylee (Robert) Marino and Kendall Bartels (Jack Robertson) and his very special great-grandsons, Roman and Marco Marino. He also leaves a brother, Jeff Veltre (Joe Cicatiello); sister-in-law, Shirley Overman; nephews, Scott (Sherry) Penwell and their son Lucas and John McMillin.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his in-laws, Dwight and Melda McCurdy; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Raymond and Phyllis Penwell; niece, Sherry Brentin; and a special cousin who was like a brother, Ron Young.
The family would like to thank his special friends and neighbors on Len Ann Drive who were always there with him.
Family and friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, at Terry Cunningham Funeral Home, 203 Oak St., Bessemer, Pa.
Calling hours will again take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, at First Covenant Church in Bessemer, with the funeral services beginning at 11 a.m.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will provide military honors at the church.
Burial will take place in the Castle View Memorial Gardens in New Castle, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas PL, Memphis, TN, 38105.
