CANFIELD -- Sister Mary Helen Nordick, OSU, died on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at Ursuline Sisters Senior Living. She was 89.
Idabell Nordick was born on Sept. 22, 1936, in Canton, the daughter of Oscar John and Estelle Ebner Nordick.
She graduated from Canton Central Catholic High School in 1954.
She entered the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown on Sept. 12, 1954, and entered the novitiate in 1955. She made her perpetual profession of vows in 1960.
She earned a BS in Education in 1959 and an MS in Education in 1974, both from Youngstown State University. She also earned a Master's in Pastoral Ministry from Loyola University, New Orleans, in 1992.
In her 65 years of public ministry, she taught at several local schools, including St. Nicholas, Struthers, St. Rose, Girard, St. Joan of Arc, Canton, Immaculate Conception, Holy Name, Sacred Heart and St. Patrick, all in Youngstown. She also taught at Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten in Canfield for several years.
In 1984, she began a ministry at St. Thomas Hospital, Akron. Beginning in 1990, she became a State Tested Nursing Aide and began to minister with the Ursuline Sisters who lived in Health Care, a ministry she continued for the next 32 years, until her retirement in 2022.
She was a member of St. Columba Cathedral Choir for many years. She also worked with the Cathedral Religious Education program.
Sister Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Elaine Brown and LaVonne Sanderson; and two brothers, John and Joseph Nordick.
She leaves her Sisters in Community and many friends.
Friends may call beginning at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Road, Canfield. The funeral Mass will begin at 5 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, make memorial contributions to Ursuline Sisters Mission.
