AKRON -- Rocco DiGennaro Jr., born Nov. 26, 1961, was called home to heaven on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Rocco was the beloved husband of Terri Zakrzewski DiGennaro and a devoted father to Vikki (Allan) Velayo, Craig (Lianne) Giambattista, Rocco (Ashley) DiGennaro and Deana (James) Laska. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Rocco DiGennaro, and his son, Ryan Giambattista.
Of all the roles Rocco held throughout his life, none meant more to him than being "Papa" to his grandchildren, Grayson, Chloe, Lily, Stella and Killian. They were, without question, his absolute favorite people and his greatest source of pride and happiness. Time spent with Papa will remain among their most treasured memories.
After a brief stint as a paramedic, Rocco spent his entire career as a laborer and ultimately retired as business manager of Laborers' Local 125, an accomplishment of which he was incredibly proud. He took great pride and passion in his work, the union and the brothers he represented throughout his career.
Anyone who knew Rocco knew that he could be stubborn, usually had something to say, and always seemed to have a funny saying ready for the occasion. Those sayings -- and the unmistakable way he delivered them -- will continue to make his family laugh for years to come.
Rocco loved riding and tinkering with his Harleys and took many trips, both short and long, with his wife. Cooking for his family was more than a hobby, and the Italian food that he made brought everyone together. His sauce and homemade pizza were family favorites, and the kitchen was one of the many places where he showed his love for the people around him.
Rocco leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and countless memories that will carry on through his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and Papa; a proud laborer and union leader; a great cook; and a man who was completely and unmistakably himself.
An open house for friends and family, with refreshments honoring Rocco, will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Sept. 27, 2026, at the Davis-Becker Family Center, 8560 Market St., Boardman.
