STRUTHERS -- Robert "Sloopy" Karis, 76, passed away on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
He was born on Aug. 24, 1950, in Youngstown.
Robert was a graduate of Struthers High School, Class of 1968, and went on to earn an associate degree from Youngstown State University.
He served his country as an Air Force Vietnam veteran with the Military Police, a chapter of his life marked by duty and service.
He built a working life that included time at Sheet & Tube and concluded with his retirement from Astro Shapes in 2017.
Beyond his work, Robert was known as the life of the party, someone who brought energy and warmth wherever he went. He enjoyed seeing local bands, loved to sing and dance and found joy in playing the keyboards. He was also a member of the Mahoning Sportsman's Club, reflecting his connection to the outdoors and the interests he cherished most.
Among the accomplishments and moments dearest to him, fishing with his grandson stood as a special source of pride and happiness. Those times captured the deep value he placed on family and on sharing the simple pleasures of life with the people he loved.
Robert is survived by his wife, Peggie Karis; his daughter, Michelle Karis; his son, Michael Karis, and Michael's wife, Sherry Karis; his grandson, Michael Karis; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joanna and Jack Kumik.
He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Karis; his mother, Mary Kolos Karis; his sister, Sylvia Badelli; and his brothers, James Karis, Richard Karis, Stephen Karis and Donald Karis.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, 2726 Center Road, Youngstown, OH 44514. A celebration of life will follow at 6 p.m.
Robert will be remembered for his spirited nature, his love of music and good times, his service to his country and the devotion he showed to his family. His memory will remain a lasting comfort to those who knew and loved him.
