YOUNGSTOWN -- George Briel, 96, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, at Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
George was born at home Aug. 21, 1930, in Youngstown, the son of the late William and Bertha Reuter Briel.
He was a graduate of Chaney High School, Class of January 1949.
After high school, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps. He was in the Night Fighter Squadron stationed at Cherry Point, North Carolina.
George, along with his wife Faye, owned and operated Briel’s Flowers, their family business, for nearly 100 years.
George was a member of the Saxon Club, Eastern Ohio Conservation Club and Penn Ohio Five Points Model A Club. He was a proud owner of a 1931 Model A. He also spent many years at Wedgewood Lanes in the Sunday Bowling League.
George is survived by his loving children, daughter, Paula Kohler; son, George (Frances) Briel Jr.; four grandchildren, Casey (Kim) Skufca, Heather (Fred) Hively, Zachary (Sara) Kohler and Molly (David) Barnhart; 14 great-grandchildren, Maddy, Emily, Abby and Riley Skufca, Asa, Jet, Indie, Olivia and Calvin Hively, Linus and Leland Kohler, and Rory, Maeve and Tilly Barnhart; and sisters-in-law, Shirley McGavin and Rita Cecil.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecilia “Faye” Briel, whom he married April 15, 1953, and who passed away Jan. 11, 2022; brother, William “Bud” Briel Jr.; and sister, Jean Karran.
A special thanks to Aventura at Humility House Austintown Staff and his special friends he made while a resident there the last 18 months.
Family and friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 2, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, 4303 Mahoning Ave., followed by a funeral service at noon.
