AUSTINTOWN -- Gene Melcher, 89, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at her home.
She was born on March 4, 1937, in Steubenville, Ohio, the daughter of Sidney E. Harris and Leota A. Harris.
Gene graduated from Steubenville High School in 1955, and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Franciscan University of Steubenville.
She met her husband, H. Robert "Bob" Melcher, at a bar near The Ohio State University while he was a student there and she was working as an accountant at a golf course.
Gene was actively engaged in her children's lives through the PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and their many sporting and band activities. Later, she devoted many hours as a volunteer with the Friends of the Austintown Library, where she helped with the Friends Bookstore.
She is survived by her daughter, Stacie Melcher of Longmeadow, Massachusetts; her son, Marc Melcher of Boca Raton, Florida; and two granddaughters, Kelsey and Aidia.
A celebration of life gathering will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026, at her home, 2630 Hamman Drive, Austintown, OH 44511.
In honor of her love of reading and her dedication to the library, memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in her name to the Friends of the Austintown Library, 600 S. Raccoon Road, Youngstown, OH 44515.
