SALEM - Michael Ethan Stein M.D., 75, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, in Salem, surrounded by family.
A retired diagnostic radiologist, formerly practicing in central Florida and Youngstown, he was a graduate of The Ohio State University and the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico, and was a resident in radiology at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. He also pursued further MRI studies. Mike had a welcoming attitude and attended to others’ needs before his own.
Born in Steubenville to the late Lester and Pearl Farber Stein, Mike was also preceded in death by his brother, Eric B. Stein; brother-in-law, Robert A. Buerki; in-laws, Harry and Marjorie Lynch Fitzgerald; and nephew, C. J. Fitzgerald.
His blessed memory is now cherished by his wife, Maureen Fitzgerald Stein; sons, Kevin C. and Mark P. Stein (Sierra Cooper); sister, Leslie Stein Buerki (Fred Bartenstein); nephew, Robin (Amy Gilbert) Buerki; and grandnieces, Lenox, Zadie and Marni Buerki; aunt, Rose Farber; sister-in-law, Sherri P. Stein; niece, Erin B. Stein (Jim Ball and daughter, Emerson Ball); and grandniece, Evie S. Chortek; niece, Jillian (Max) Lipset; and grandnieces and grandnephew, Sasha, Hope and Caleb Lipset; brother-in-law, Gary (Linda) Fitzgerald; niece, Jennifer Fitzgerald (Phillippe Benard); brother-in-law, Brad (Karen) Fitzgerald; nephews, Jason (Lindsey) and grandniece, Dezarae Fitzgerald, and Tyler (Mario Rodriguez) Fitzgerald; nieces, Audra (Travis) Brown and Ashley (Anthony) Fuller; and Mike's many cousins residing in New Jersey, New York, and Florida. A 52-year friendship with medical school roommate and colleague, Walter Dombroski, is also fondly remembered.
A memorial service officiated by Rabbi Judy Chessin will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, at Temple Beth Or, 5275 Marshall Road, Dayton, OH 45249, with a condolence meal to follow. A livestream will be available for attendees unable to make the trip in person.
In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial gift to Mike’s alma mater through The Ohio State University Medical Heritage Center at the Health Sciences Library or to Temple Beth Or, Dayton.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements by the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home, Salem.
