POLAND -- Barbara Jean Bletzer, 84, of Poland, formerly of Boardman, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026, at Hampton Woods Nursing Center.
Barbara was born on March 24, 1942, in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Lawrence L. and Eileen Wells Davis.
A lifelong area resident, she graduated from East High School in 1960 and dedicated much of her professional life to public service.
Barb worked for the Boardman Police Department for 25 years, including 19 years with the Mahoning County Drug Task Force. She retired in May 2006. During her career, she was a proud member of the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and Mahoning County OPERS Chapter #18.
Retirement opened the door to what Barb considered her next calling in life. She devoted countless hours as a volunteer at Akron Children's Hospital, where she operated the craft cart and book cart for hospitalized children. She also became known for creating and maintaining the seasonal decorations at the hospital's front desk throughout the year. Barb believed that the front desk was the first thing families saw when entering the hospital and that a welcoming, beautiful environment reflected the compassion and care patients and their loved ones would receive during their stay.
In recognition of her outstanding commitment to volunteer service, Barb was honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award in 2014. Her generosity, creativity, and dedication touched the lives of countless children and families.
Barbara is survived by her brother, Larry (Donna) Davis; many nieces and nephews; and her neighbors, whom she adopted as family, Taryn and Jeff Barr and their son, Levi, who called her "Baba."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Gregory Bletzer; her beloved daughter, JoEllen Bletzer; her sister, Carol Davidson; and her former husband, Gehris "Bud" Bletzer.
Barb will be remembered for her servant's heart, her unwavering commitment to helping others, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her kindness, compassion and attention to detail left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of service and love will continue to inspire family, friends and the many lives she touched throughout her years.
Family and friends will forever cherish her memory and find comfort in the countless acts of kindness she shared with others.
Friends may call from 1 until 1:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, at Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m.
