KOSSUTH, Pa. -- Vernon Lee Hughes, 95, of Kossuth, Pa., formerly of Canfield, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, at his daughter and son-in-law's home, where he lived the last two years of his life.
Vernon was born on Jan. 27, 1931, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Russel and Lulu Summitt Hughes. He married Daphene Mize Hughes on April 14, 1956; and they shared 56 years of marriage until her passing. He always said he knew she was special the moment he saw her. When they took a walk together, he pushed her into a creek, and she came up laughing; he knew then that she was the woman he wanted to marry. Together, they built a life and a business they could be proud of, opening their own painting and wallpaper company, Hughes Country Homes. Working side by side, they poured their time, talent and dedication into the business, creating not only beautiful spaces for others but also a lasting legacy of partnership and love.
Vernon found joy in life's simple things. He loved woodworking, crafting and gardening alongside his wife. He cherished trips to the beach and especially treasured taking his grandchildren camping in Cook Forest, creating memories they would carry with them for years to come. Vernon also loved reading and studying the Bible. He was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and loved spending time in the ministry, sharing his hope with others. Vernon served as an elder in many congregations over the years in Mississippi, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
He leaves behind his daughter, Karen (Jim) Wise; two grandsons, Nicholas (Ashley) Mong and Dylan (Amani) Wise; three great-grandchildren, November (Max) Grishpenyuk, Tahmona Mong and Carter Mong, with another great-grandchild currently on the way; his sister-in-law, Geneva Hughes; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Vernon was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Hughes; his brother-in-law and lifelong friend, Leeland Mize, and his wife, MaryBeth; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tolah and Mildred Mize.
The family extends special thanks to the many nurses, aides, caregivers and friends who provided compassionate care and comfort during the final chapter of Vernon's life. Your kindness and support will always be deeply appreciated.
The Robert V. Burns Funeral Home in Clarion, Pa., has the distinct honor of serving the family, and cremation care has been entrusted to the RV Burns Crematorium Inc.
A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 700 Brookdale Ave., East Palestine, OH 44413. Livestreaming of the services will be available for those who are unable to attend.
