YOUNGSTOWN -- Stephen Slavins, 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, at home.
Stephen was born Feb. 4, 1929, at his family home, a son of Michael and Anna Vodhanel Pohmurski. He was adopted, at age 2 by Charles and Mary Grumel Sylwczak Slavins.
Stephen was a graduate of East High School. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1952.
Stephen married the love of his life, the former Doris Sivecz, on May 29, 1954, and they shared 48 years of marriage until her passing on Jan. 8, 2002.
Stephen was baptized at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown.
He was very active in the church and served with nine pastors; during this time he was a bus driver/dispatcher, pirohi sales manager/treasurer, Diamond Jubilee co-chairman/treasurer; festival chairman/treasurer; Byzantine Men's Association president/treasurer; Shady Run Picnic Grove rental chairman/treasurer; a church epistle reader; an usher and collection counter; and a councilman for many years.
He retired in 1985 after 36 years at Republic Steel Corporation.
Stephen will be deeply missed and always remembered by his daughter, Terry Slavins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; and siblings, Anna, Michael, Mary, Helen, Veronica, Joseph, Margie and Edward.
The Slavins family has entrusted Stephen's care to the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell. Calling hours will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown followed at 10 a.m. by a funeral service.
Stephen will be laid to rest in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Stephen has requested that donations be made to St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church Renovations, 1898 Wilson Ave., Youngstown, OH 44506.
