WARREN -- Marilyn S. Norris, 83, a devoted and loving wife, mother and nana, passed away Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026.
She was born Nov. 6, 1942, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Nicholas Gilida and Mary Fetchet Gilida Hickman.
Marilyn was a 1960 graduate of Boardman High School and a 1963 graduate of Kent State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority at Kent State. She married David R. Norris (deceased) on July 25, 1964, and they had three children.
Marilyn was a schoolteacher for more than 25 years, focusing on math and Latin. She retired in 2013 from Warren City Schools. Teaching was Marilyn's passion. Her heart was very invested in helping her students. After retirement, she loved running into former students and talking to them. She missed teaching so much that she went back to substitute teach for a few years after retirement. During her teaching career, she was also a 24 Challenge Math coach for several years, one of her favorite extracurricular teaching activities.
Marilyn was an avid reader of political, crime and medical thrillers. She was also very active in sports. She played tennis, both singles and doubles, and played often as a member of the Warren Olympic Club. As a member of the Trumbull Country Club, she pursued her love of golf and achieved a hole-in-one on that course. She also enjoyed traveling and playing bridge and board games. She was always one of the first people on the dance floor at a special event, and the last to leave it. Marilyn enjoyed seeing theater productions locally and in Cleveland at Playhouse Square. She was an amazing cook, known for her delicious dinner recipes that she readily shared with others.
Marilyn also gave back to the community, volunteering for Junior Achievement, the American Heart Association, and in the gift shop at Trumbull Regional Medical Center (formerly Trumbull Memorial Hospital).
Marilyn is survived by her three children, Gayle Norris of Cleveland, Kevin (Carolina) Norris of Cleveland, and Jennifer Norris (Mike) of Westerville; her five grandchildren, Alexander, Daphne, Julian, Maryanne and Charles Norris; and her brother, Nicholas (Gladys) Gilida of Denver, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Family and friends may call to pay respects at 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Service Inc., 533 North Park Ave., Warren, OH 44481. A funeral service will follow afterward at the funeral home with the Rev. Fr. Miron Kerul'-Kmec Jr. of SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church officiating.
Burial will follow the service in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.
