Marie S. Kushma 1946-2026

ASHTABULA -- Marie S. Watt Kushma, 79, of Ashtabula, passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

Born Sept. 30, 1946, in Edinburg, Pa., Marie was the daughter of Albert and Sara Brandon Watt.

She graduated from Mohawk High School.

She met the love of her life, Michael Kushma, and the pair relocated to Ashtabula in 1974. In 1975, they married, and in 1979 had their daughter, Suzanne. They shared 51 years of marriage as a truly great team.

After working at several businesses in Ashtabula, including Nelson Machine and AAA, she retired from Ashtabula Rubber Company in 2007 after 20 years as a press operator.

With a passion for nature, Mike and Marie spent many hours riding their recumbent bicycles through the Edgewood Cemetery and the Greenway Trail. They loved walking the Pymatuning nature trails and spending time gardening in their yard. They loved camping on her inherited piece of the Watt property in Edinburg, where they harvested hay with the family. She was also accomplished in the kitchen in both cooking and baking and made most holiday meals and desserts completely from scratch.

Marie is survived by her husband, Michael; her daughter, Suzanne (Kevin Westlake); her grandsons, Ethan and Sefton Westlake; and many family and friends who will miss her dearly.

The family is planning a small celebration of life for a later date this year.

They ask that you cherish the happy memories and if you wish to honor her, plant a tree or native pollinator plant and enjoy the wildlife that uses it.
