Lawrence R. Saykes 1941-2026

COLUMBUS -- Lawrence R. Saykes, 85, departed this life on Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Larry, affectionately known as "Bear," was born on March 19, 1941, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of William Saykes and the former Loretta Cummings.

Larry was a graduate of Ursuline High School and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in education from Youngstown College in 1964. He was also a member of YSU's football team.

Larry dedicated 30 years of his life to a successful career in sales with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. After retiring, Larry picked up several activities, one being driving clients for The Purple Cat for several years. He also became an avid winemaker, which benefitted many family members and friends.

Larry was a member of the YMCA of Youngstown, where he enjoyed working out and socializing. His love for Youngstown State football was evident in his unwavering support as a season ticketholder. He coached at Ursuline High School and also proudly coached his son in football.

Larry found solace in nature, which was evident by his beloved cabin in Pennsylvania. This cabin served as a retreat for hunting, fishing, hiking and four-wheeling with his wife, family and friends. He also took up wood carving, crafting intricate figurines and Santa Clauses. Larry's dry

wit and sense of humor were felt by everyone who knew him. He was a joy to be around and was loved by many.

Larry is survived by his wife, Maureen G. Mason; son, Larry Saykes (Marianne) of Aurora; daughters, Jacci (Brian) Scragg of Powell, Janine (Thomy Colla) Saykes of Fairhope, Alabama, and Vikki Maguire of Youngstown; sister, Judy (Jim) Walker; brother, Gary (Cathy Baker) Saykes; son-in-law, Larry Gatta; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Gatta; sisters, Sandy McNally and Shirley Basciano; and brother, Jerry Saykes.

Calling hours will take place 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, 3701 Starr Centre Drive, Canfield, OH 44406.

A funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, at St. Christine Church. Burial will follow in Tod Homestead Cemetery.
