POLAND -- Jean Slaven, 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, at The Woodlands at Hampton Woods in Poland, surrounded by her loving family.
Jean was born on April 25, 1929, in Hanoverton, a daughter of the late James McCormick and Hannah L. Brown McCormick.
She graduated from Struthers High School in 1947 and attended Youngstown College.
Jean lived in Millport, Ohio, for five years and in Washington, D.C., for two years before spending the majority of her life in the Youngstown area.
While living in Washington, D.C., she worked as a clerk in the FBI's Washington, D.C., office. After returning to the Mahoning Valley, Jean became manager of the Trading Post (Scout Shop) for the Boy Scouts of America Youngstown office, where she worked 16 years before retiring in 1986.
Jean was a charter member of Poland Presbyterian Church.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of a bridge club. Jean also loved painting with oils, camping and traveling with family and friends.
Jean is survived by her classmate and beloved husband of 78 years, Ray E. Slaven, whom she married on Dec. 27, 1949, at Poland Presbyterian Church; six grandchildren, Jeb (Katherine) Slaven, Emily (Dan) Culp, John Dubec Jr., Erin Slaven, Katie Slaven and Hannah Dubec; five great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Emily Slaven of Poland; and son-in-law, John (Heidi) Dubec of Struthers.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her three children, Rick P. Slaven, Michael R. Slaven and Sharon J. Dubec.
Family and friends may call from 12 to 12:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland.
A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Dr. Paul Anderson officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman.
