YOUNGSTOWN -- James Earl Glenn, 97, of Youngstown, peacefully transitioned from this life to eternal rest on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026.
Mr. Glenn, affectionately known as "Jim," was born May 21, 1929, in Paducah, Kentucky, a son of Herbert Lee and Alma Dulin Glenn.
Jim's mother passed away in 1931 when he was 20 months old, and his father passed in 1938 when he was nine years old. Jim was then raised by his sister, Mary Glenn Sledd, along with his older brother Herbert and sisters, Alma, Georgia, Lottie and Dorothy.
Jim was a 1946 graduate of Scott High School in Toledo; attended Davis Business College; and received his BS Degree after attending the University of Toledo and University of Maryland.
In 1946, he enlisted in the U. S. Army at the end of WWII and served for six years. In 1952, he was honorably discharged and returned to Toledo, where he continued his education.
During his studies, Jim worked for Public Accountant Manuel Fleming for several years before entering service with the U. S. Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service as an internal revenue agent. During his assignment in the Youngstown area, where he supervised agents in Youngstown, Warren, Steubenville, East Liverpool and Bellaire offices. He was also directly involved in cases of well-known individuals in organized crime and individuals in local, county and state federal offices.
After retiring from the IRS, Jim became active in the Youngstown Community and was associated with the Youngstown Area Development Corporation - Trustee, CEO and Treasurer; Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corp. - Trustee and Treasurer; Mahoning Valley Industrial Loan Fund (MVEDC) Chairman; Youngstown Commerce Park and Warren Commerce Park – Trustee and Treasurer; Rail Corporation I & II Trustee and Treasurer; Trustee and Board Chairman for Forum Health; Western Reserve Care System, Youngstown Community Housing Corporation, Plaza View Apartments I, II & III, Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, Tod Homestead Cemetery Assn., National Society of Public Accountants and the L. E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home and the International Institute Foundation of Youngstown.
Jim always said his life was blessed with special friends, numbering in the hundreds, namely just a few, Dr. Henry Holden Sr., Henry Holden Jr., Lehman Black, Dr. Bennie Allison, Phillip Montmore, Joe and Bill Spurio, Frank DeJude, Trudy McDonald, Sharon Daniel, Ed and P. D. Donnegan, Duane and Patty Crossley, Monsignor Siffrin, Dick and Rita Rodgers, and on and on!!
Jim is survived by many nieces and nephews: Lelia Campbell, Kenneth (Dominique) Campbell, Gordon (Linda) Campbell, Herbert (Darlene) Glenn, Gary (Laura) Glenn, Carol Lea, Lynda (Ray) Anderson, Smitty Vinson, James Herbert Vinson; and a host of family and dear friends.
Besides his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, the former Marie Strawder, who he was married for 69 years, and who passed away in 2021; his only son, Tom, who passed away in 2013; his siblings, Herbert Lee Glenn, Mary Sledd, Alma Glenn Campbell, Georgia Glenn Tillman, Dorothy Glenn Harris and Lottie Vinson.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, at the L. E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home, 1951 McGuffey Road, Youngstown, OH 44505.
A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11 a.m. Monday.
