Dorothy Frances Yatsco Makosky 1934-2026

CLEVELAND -- Dorothy Frances Yatsco Makosky, 91, a lifelong resident of the Youngstown area, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, at the Slovene Home for the Aged in Cleveland. Dorothy will be deeply missed and always remembered by her two daughters, Donna Jean and Sharon Marie.

Dorothy was born Sept. 17, 1934, in Campbell, a daughter of Michael and Alice Hamrock Yatsco.

She was a 1952 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School.

On Nov. 27, 1952, Dorothy married the love of her life, George M. Makosky, with whom she shared 28 years of marriage until his passing on April 30, 1980.

Dorothy spent 40 years working hard and making friends with customers as a waitress at The Brown Derby Restaurant on South Avenue in Youngstown, and worked well into her 80s at Plaza Donuts Boardman.

Dorothy loved going to casinos, especially for the slot machines and couldn't resist a bingo night or a scratchoff lottery ticket. Spending time with her family was one of her favorite things, and she thoroughly enjoyed beating them at cards. In her earlier years, she enjoyed bowling leagues and recently she loved word search puzzles, watching television and game shows.

Dorothy was a parishioner of St. Dominic Church, Youngstown.

Dorothy is survived by daughter, Donna Makosky-Woods (Howard Woods) of Cleveland; grandsons, Christopher and Zachary Woods; and great-granddaughter, Aine Mullen-Woods. She is also survived by daughter, Sharon Romina of Twinsburg; and granddaughters, Ashley Romina (Douglas Bittner) and Angel Romina. Her family also includes brother-in-law, Andy (Angela) Makosky; as well as many dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Alice; husband, George; brother, Fred (Ginny) Yatsco; and sisters, Helen (John) Walihnac and Cynthia Makosky; along with Makosky in-laws, Helenka, Bill and Mary, Terry and Roland Miller, Joe and Terry, Eddie and Dolly, Ann and Andy Hvisdak, and John and Rose.

The Makosky family has entrusted Dorothy's care to the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell, where calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026.

A prayer service will begin at 12:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, at the funeral home, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Dominic Church, Youngstown.
