Bert A. Protheroe 1938-2026

HUBBARD — Bert A. Protheroe, 87, passed Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Bert was born Oct. 5, 1938, in Youngstown, a son of Frederick and Helen Elizabeth Shingledecker Protheroe. He was a 1956 graduate of The Rayen School and later attended Youngstown State University.

Bert was a heavy equipment operator at Youngstown Sheet & Tube for many years, retiring in 1982, and was the owner and operator of Bert’s Airless Spray Painting.

He was a talented woodworker and especially enjoyed remodeling his own home.

Bert was a volunteer for the City of Hubbard for many years, where he drove the Hubbard Community Van, and was a fan of the Cleveland Browns.

He was a man of strong faith and a member of Victory Christian Center, where he sang in the choir and was a volunteer for the food bank and numerous other church activities.

Bert was a veteran of the United States Navy.

He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family: his wife, the former Joan E. Pugh, whom he married April 22, 1964; his children, Stephen A. (Deborah) Protheroe of Hubbard, Sharon A. (Kerry) Fitzwater of Hubbard and Michael T. Protheroe of Ormond Beach, Florida; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He also leaves his sister, Anne Whitfield of San Diego, California.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Grimm, and brothers-in-law, Harold Grimm and Donald Whitfield.

There will be calling hours 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2026, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Bert will be laid to rest in Hubbard Union Cemetery.
