Annette L. Kirksey 1941-2026

Born March 20, 1941, in Cleveland, Annette was the cherished daughter of Lula Holloway and Claude Williams.

Throughout her life, she embodied resilience and grace. She left behind a legacy of joy, generosity and wisdom that will be treasured by her family, friends and community for all time.

Annette was married to H.R. Kirksey Jr. (aka Hank) and they welcomed five children into the world: Kim, Tracey, Tina (Erroll), Kellie (Cesar) and Kasy, who were the pride and joy of Annette’s life. She was a devoted mother who taught her children the values of compassion, kindness and courage.

Annette was educated at John Hay High School and pursued studies at Barber College, following in her father’s footsteps.

Her career as a barber spanned more than 50 years, during which she not only styled hair, but also provided sage advice on life, relationships and more. Her clientele was as diverse as the wisdom she imparted, ranging from community members to renowned figures like one of the Tuskegee Airmen, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and motivational speaker and Ohio House of Representatives member, Les Brown. Annette had a unique ability to make everyone feel valued, often turning off her clippers mid-cut to offer a life lesson or share a fried fish sandwich.

Her home was a sanctuary for many and she frequently opened her doors to those in need — whether they were escaping domestic violence, facing LGBTQ discrimination or simply in search of a safe haven. Annette’s generosity knew no bounds and her spirit of inclusivity was a testament to her deep compassion.

Annette was a devout Catholic who found peace in her faith. She was an active member of St. Timothy Catholic Church for decades, where she volunteered her time calling bingo and maintaining the sanctuary. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with comfort and strength.

A woman of many talents, Annette enjoyed crochet, sewing, playing the guitar, knitting and dancing. She bravely embraced new experiences, such as trying whitewater rafting, and loved cooking while spending countless hours watching the Food Network. Her children fondly remember her attempts to teach them how to skip rocks, a testament to her playful and adventurous spirit.

Annette had an endearing way with words and a slew of sayings that captured her essence. Whether it was “the one who eats the fastest gets the mostest,” “same soup warmed over” or “stay mad till you get glad,” her expressions were memorable and heartfelt.

You never doubted how she felt about you, often ending a visit or call by saying, “I love you to pieces,” “I love you more” or “I love you to amazing grace.” She never let anyone doubt how much they meant to her.

She is survived by her beloved sister, Claudine Smith Reynolds; her cherished grandchildren, Mahlon, Ayla, Erroll Jr., Erin, Taylor, Mitchell, Kelsie, Gabrielle, Dominic, Kasey Jr., Chance, Chase and Kassidy; and a host of treasured great-grandchildren.

Annette’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers of McGregor Home and Hospice of Greater Cleveland for their loving support.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2026, at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown.

In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted for the Annette Kirksey Female Barber Education Fund.
