Patrick J. Lally 1952-2026

YOUNGSTOWN — Patrick J. Lally, 74, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, June 21, 2026.

He was born Feb. 12, 1952, in Youngstown, to the late Richard T. and Mary M. Lettau Lally.

After graduating from Cardinal Mooney High School in 1970, Patrick went on and received a B.A. in history, summa cum laude, from St. Joseph College in Indiana, an M.A. in history with honors from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in medieval history from the University of Chicago.

Patrick retired from the U.S. Navy after 31 years of service, where he served as a medic in the Hospital Corps during Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Enduring Freedom and obtained the rank of master chief petty officer.

During his service in the Navy, Patrick received many awards, including the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, Fleet Marine Force Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon and the Navy Pistol Ribbon.

Being an active person, Patrick was self-employed as a house painter; extension services manager for the Portage County Library; a Latin translator at the University of Chicago; an assistant manager for K53 CH TV, St. Paul, Minnesota; a security officer at Sims Security in St. Paul; a research fellow at the Institute of Medieval Canon Law at the University of California School of Law; and a library assistant in the Special Collections Department, Joseph Regenstein Library, at the University of Chicago.

Patrick was a member of St. Dominic Church, American Legion Post 15, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Men and Women United for Life, and the Fish and Game Club of Vienna, plus a member of the Youngstown YMCA.

His faith and family were an important part of his life; he was a Big Brother and went on many camping trips with his family and attended many events of his many nieces and nephews.

Patrick leaves to cherish his memory, his brother, Richard Lally of St. Paul, Minnesota; sisters, Miriam (Charles) Holden of Youngstown, Martha (Michael) Hurtuk of Ashtabula, Anne Lally of Canfield and Kathleen (Douglas) Burkhardt of Strasburg; nieces, Fiona Lally, Rebecca Shrake, Emily Martinez and Maggie Thompson; nephews, Connor Sullivan, Kevin Lally, Patrick Lally, Kevin Hurtuk and Ryan Hurtuk; and 16 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Family and friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2026, at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave., by the Rev Frassati Davis, O.P.

Patrick will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.
