Judith W. Rust 1940-2026

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Judith W. Rust, 85, formerly of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 14, 1940, in Struthers, to the late Ernest F. and Myrle Eisenbraun Prest. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Donald Prest and Richard Prest.

Judy held degrees in education from Kent State University and Youngstown State University. After her teaching career, she became a well-known huckleberry bark basketmaker and earned great acclaim as the “Bark Basket Lady” of Roan Mountain, Tennessee. She was also known for her vibrantly painted furniture and love of travel and photography. She delighted in finding hidden treasures in faraway corners.

She married Matthew M. Wansack, DDS, in 1962, and they lived in Florida, Alaska, California and Ohio. Following his passing, she married Dr. Jerry H. Rust Jr. in 1973. They resided in Kentucky and the mountains of East Tennessee.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Singer (Phillip) and Jennifer Wansack of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Michael Rust (Lora) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Pamela Neal of Blountville, Tennessee; her grandchildren, Anna Metzger (Bradley), Abigail Dickert (George), Russell Neal (Rachel), Allie Flowers (T.C.), Hunter Rust, Scott Strednak-Singer (Katie), Britt Singer and Chadwick Singer (Autumn); as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Cremation was chosen at Judy’s request.

Private burial services will take place in Poland.
