Janet Hawkins 1933-2026
POLAND — Janet Hawkins, 92, of Poland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with family by her side.
Born on Oct. 31, 1933, in Youngstown, Janet was the daughter of the late Isabel and Joseph Moran.
She was raised with a strong Irish heritage and a deep Catholic faith, values that remained an important part of her life.
She grew up attending Catholic grade school and was a proud graduate of Ursuline High School. She then attended Youngstown College, where she earned her degree before beginning work at the bus station. Later, she became a secretary at Youngstown Sheet & Tube and often fondly recalled driving to work each day with her father.
Janet married William Hawkins on June 16, 1963.
After raising her daughter, she decided to return to school to study cosmetology. There, she formed lifelong friendships with a group affectionately known as the “Chosen Few” and began a fulfilling career as a hairdresser. Her favorite clients were her friends and family. Even as she grew older, she continued spending time at the beauty shop, helping out, catching up with co-workers and enjoying the company of good friends.
Janet had a zest for life and never stopped moving. She loved baking and will always be remembered for her famous meringue pies and kolache. She enjoyed inviting friends over to her pool, hosting picnics, and making the most of every summer day. Her happiest moments were spent with her grandchildren, Isabel and Luke. Living just across the street, they would often have fun sleepovers that always included enormous ice cream sundaes topped with extra whipped cream. Janet will also be remembered for her sweet tooth, her love of shopping and her many vacations to Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband, William Hawkins; her brother and sister-in-law, Marty and Elaine Moran; her sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Carroll Smith; and her brother, James Moran.
She is survived by her daughter, Shaun (Kurt) Stoeber; her grandchildren, Isabel Stoeber (Sam Hilton) and Luke Stoeber (Katelynn McBee); her sister and brother-in-law, Elyce and Bill Fleming; her in-laws, Lois and Don Sprat; and along with many nieces and nephews who were great support to her throughout her life.
A mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. June 26, 2026, at Holy Family Church, Poland.
The family would like to thank Patriot Hospice for the compassionate care provided to both Janet and her loved ones. They would also like to express their gratitude to the nurses at The Inn at Poland Way: Sandy, Latrell, and Cheryl; as well as the staff and aides who treated Janet with kindness, dignity, and compassion.
Janet’s joyful and sassy spirit will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered, by all who knew her.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Edward J. Fox & Sons Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman.
