Doris V. Gluck 1936-2026

BOARDMAN — Doris V. Gluck, 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman, leaving behind a lifetime of wonderful memories and a family who loved her dearly.

Born Nov. 9, 1936, at her family home in Westerville, Doris was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph L. and Ruth V. Schott Shoaf. She graduated from Big Walnut High School in 1954 before attending Capital University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. While there, she was active in athletics, playing both volleyball and basketball, and served as president of the Women’s Recreation Association.

Teaching was a natural fit for Doris. She spent a majority of her career teaching first grade at Market Street Elementary in the Boardman school system, helping young people learn and grow in the classroom, and even after retirement, continued substitute teaching because she genuinely enjoyed working with students.

It was during her time at Capital University that she met Edward L. Gluck, the man who would become her husband and lifelong partner; they were married June 21, 1959, and shared 53 years together filled with love, laughter, friendship and adventure until Edward’s passing in 2012.

Together, Doris and Ed embraced every opportunity to see the world. Through their involvement with Kiwanis, they traveled throughout the United States and abroad, visiting places such as Hong Kong, Taipei, Korea, Japan, England, Germany, France and Canada. Their kindness extended far beyond their travels, as they also opened their home to exchange students from Ecuador, Finland, Colombia and Brazil, many of whom remained special to them long after their stays ended.

Doris found joy in life’s simple pleasures — cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes, following Cleveland baseball, spending time with family and keeping in touch with the people she cared about. More than anything, she was devoted to those she loved and treasured the time they spent together.

She leaves behind her sons, Randy (Char) Gluck of Boardman and Gary (Dana) Gluck of Milford; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Justin) Cira, Audrey Gluck and Jonah Gluck; her great-grandsons, Isaac and Aiden Cira; her brother, Norman (Pat) Shoaf; and her sister, Marian (Don) Eberhard.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward; an infant brother, Charles Shoaf; her grandparents, Philip and Agatha Schott; and brother-in-law, Robert W. Gluck.

Friends may visit 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, Boardman, and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2026, at Bethel Lutheran Church, where a funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Lake Park Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Poland Village Assisted Living, Shepherd of the Valley, Dialize Direct and Akeso Home Care and Hospice for their compassionate care of Doris in her time of need.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that material contributions be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, OH 44512, in her memory.
