John J. Edwards 1940-2026
SALEM — John J. Edwards died Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the age of 85, at Hospice House.
John was born Aug. 12, 1940, in Youngstown, a son of John W. Edwards and the former Margaret Hoover.
A 1960 graduate of Canfield High School, John served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Korea. He was among the first hires at General Motors, where he worked as a line foreman. His passion for coin collecting eventually led him to work at a coin dealership in Salem.
John was a horse farm owner and an avid collector of antiques, ranging from furniture to glassware and vintage clocks.
John was a steadfast member of the United Auto Workers (UAW). He volunteered at the Ursuline Center in Canfield, where he counseled families affected by AIDS. He also volunteered with the Ursuline Sisters, helping train them to facilitate support groups. He freely offered his time and wisdom to family, friends and anyone in need. People knew they could turn to John for kindness and sound advice.
John is survived by his brother, Harry “Huck” Edwards, and nieces, Georgia Sue (Mark) Wilson, Beverly (Mike) Suess, Peggy Playforth and Becky (Brian) Snyder.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore Edwards, and his sister, Diane Playforth.
