Fred Merkich 1944-2026

MINERAL RIDGE — Fred Merkich, 81, passed away Monday, May 4, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, warmth and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved.

Fred was born Dec. 4, 1944, the son of Fred and Pauline Rohan Merkich. He was a lifelong area resident and a proud graduate of Chaney High School.

Fred continued his education at Ohio University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in education.

Fred dedicated more than 35 years of his life as a teacher, school guidance counselor and coach impacting countless students with his wisdom, compassion and steady presence. He was known for his intelligence, his ability to engage in meaningful conversations and his unwavering willingness to be there for others.

A parishioner of St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard, Fred’s faith was an important part of his life.

He was a loving and devoted son, husband, father and grandfather who truly lived for his family. As a father, he was a steady source of guidance and wisdom and he cherished time spent with loved ones.

Fred had a lifelong passion for sports. A talented athlete in his younger years, he continued to enjoy athletics as a fan. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Cleveland sports and the Buckeyes, and some of his most cherished times were spent talking sports with his sons.

A social soul who loved being around people, Fred stayed active throughout his retirement. He was a familiar face during his walks at the mall, a dedicated regular at his gym, and found great peace and pride tending to his garden.

Fred will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Paula Yanniello Merkich, whom he married July 24, 1971; his children, Fred Michael (Jen) Merkich, Jennifer Merkich and Brian (Paula) Merkich; his cherished grandchildren, Sophia Merkich, Nick Merkich and Audrey Merkich; his brother, Robert (Kathleen) Merkich; and sister, Judith Merkich.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his in-laws, Michael and Maria Yanniello.

Family and friends may call 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel, 1350 N. Canfield Niles Road, Mineral Ridge.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Rose Catholic Church, 48 E. Main St., Girard.
