Margaret Fox 1923-2026
CANFIELD — Margaret Fox dealt her last hand and folded the deck on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the age of 102.
Margaret, affectionately known as Peg, was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Youngstown, the only child of William E. and Stella Bingaman Ashton.
She grew up in the city, playing in Mill Creek Park and walking to Idora Park to swim. Her life long love of ice cream started at Parkers in Fosterville.
Peg was a graduate of South High School. She worked for the Selective Service during and after graduation sending out draft notices during World War ll.
Peg married Carl A Swanson on July 20, 1946. After several years, they moved to Poland, with their two children. Carl preceded her in death on June 15, 1968. Peg married her second husband, William A. Fox on May 22, 1971.
Peg was a very socially active person. She loved having fun and being on the move. Peg made friends easily. She belonged to several bowling leagues, golf leagues and many bridge clubs throughout the years. She will be remembered as an avid bridge player.
Peg owned and operated Jack & Jill Nursery School, located in Poland Methodist Church, for several years.
She was a past member of several organizations, from dance clubs to Poland Women’s Club. Peg was a member of Poland Presbyterian Church and the Ruth Shrine No. 64.
Peg leaves behind her daughter, Barbara (Jim) Stewart; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Swanson; four grandsons, Jeff Swanson of Savannah, Georgia, Trevor (Holly) Stewart of Poland, Jason (Marcie) Swanson of Bluffton, South Carolina and Troy Stewart of Poland. She leaves five great-grandchildren, Logan and Carolyn Stewart and Paige, Lauren and Ashley Swanson.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Carl Swanson; her son, Jeffrey C. Swanson Sr.; her second husband, Bill Fox; and his son, Jim Fox, and wife, Linda.
Peg leaves behind her bridge partners and many friends.
Friends may call from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, April 24, at Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Poland Manor, Poland. The service will take place at 11 a.m.
Lunch will be served at the church, right after the funeral service.
Peg will be buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peg’s memory may be made to help with prostate cancer research and treatments at Prostate Cancer Foundation (cure.pcf.org), Zero Prostate Cancer (zero cancer.org), StanduptoCancer.org or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the caring and conscientious staff of Windsor House at Canfield, for the tender hearted care they provided to Peg while making her part of their family. She was so fond of so many of them. Peg’s family also thanks Harmony Hospice for their compassionate care during her final days.
