Carol S. Christy 1939-2026
AUSTINTOWN — It is with deep love and sadness that we share the passing of Carol S. Christy, 86, of Austintown, who passed away peacefully Thursday evening, April 23, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Carol was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Frank and Evelyn Duft Sommer.
A 1957 graduate of Avalon High School, she built a life centered on family and care for others. She was a truly remarkable woman; a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
Carol spent much of her life as a homemaker and also worked as a paraprofessional with the Austintown Local School District, where she touched countless lives with her patience and caring nature.
Family was her greatest priority. She was a pillar of strength and compassion, always putting others before herself and creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and support. Her presence was constant, her encouragement endless, and her love unconditional.
Carol shared a lifelong love with her husband, Gary R. Christy, whom she met in the ninth grade. They were married on July 16, 1960, and shared nearly 66 years of marriage and over 70 years together in love and friendship. Gary survives her.
She enjoyed reading and caring for her golden retriever, Blazer. Golf was one of her passions, and she enjoyed being part of golf leagues and outings. She was active in several card clubs and especially looked forward to Friday nights spent playing cards with her daughters and friends. She also loved Euchre, where she was affectionately quoted saying, “I’m Playing My Own Game.”
Carol is survived by her daughters, Susan (Mike) Broadwater of Cincinnati and Jeanine Christy of Austintown; her grandchildren, Thomas Pallo and Chelsea (Sean) Haltam; and her great-granddaughters, Lyla and Shae. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Gary R. Christy Jr.; her sister, Janice McSorley; and her daughter-in-law, Tammy DeMarco.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 4490 Norquest Blvd., Austintown, with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Polando as celebrant. Friends may call 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. She will be laid to rest in the Green Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Canfield.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Brookdale Senior Living and AKESO Hospice for their compassionate care.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or AKESO Hospice in Carol’s memory.
Carol’s legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the love she gave so freely, and the memories her family will cherish forever. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
