AUSTINTOWN — Richard J. Craven, a courageous Vietnam veteran and dedicated friend to many, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the age of 78, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.
Richard, affectionately known as “Doc” was born Jan. 23, 1948, in Bellaire, a son of Everett Craven Jr. and the former Mabel Corbett.
Doc was known for a life defined by resilience, service and love. He proudly served in the United States Navy for three years, including a deployment in Vietnam. His service in Vietnam remained a significant, defining chapter in his life, instilling a sense of Duty and Brotherhood that lasted forever.
Doc had lived in many places, but was very proud of his Massillon roots.
In his civilian life, Doc was incredibly proud of his long-term sobriety. He was a dedicated friend of Bill Wilson for 11 years, where he found profound strength and shared that strength with others. His journey to sobriety was a testament to his character and dedication to living a full present life. To Doc, friends were not merely acquaintances, they were family. He was deeply loyal and considered his friends his chosen family, offering unwavering support and love. He leaves behind a vast “family” of dear friends and AA companions.
A funeral service will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, 4303 Mahoning Ave., officiated by Pastor Fred Schrock. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion Post 737.
Inurnment will take place in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the Youngstown Area Intergroup, 3373 Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44511.
