Miriam A. Hopkins 1923-2026
HUBBARD — Miriam A. Hopkins died peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the age of 102.
She was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Reedy, W.Va., the daughter of Guy Ernest and Jennie Bennett McCutcheon.
Miriam was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Jennie McCutcheon; her husband, Robert “Bob” Hopkins; her daughter, Lynn (Bill) Hinkle; a sister, Luzelle (Lowell) Jarvis; and two brothers, Gene (Rita) McCutcheon and Paul (Connie) McCutcheon.
She is survived by her four sons, Marc (Francine) Hopkins of Santa Clara, California; Stephen (Dorothy) Hopkins of Lancaster; David Hopkins of Louisville, Kentucky; and Daniel Hopkins of Hockessin, Delaware; granddaughters, Kate (Russ) Woods, Elizabeth Hopkins, Emily Lumpkin, Maddie (Matt) Rome and Paula Ghita; grandsons, Kenneth Hopkins and Evan Hopkins; great-granddaughter, Sophia Woods; great-grandsons, Jody Williams and Guy Woods; and her beloved cat and companion, Daisy.
Miriam was a 1941 graduate of Spencer High School.
In 1942, she went to work at the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation in Akron as a riveter in support of the war effort. She worked in support of our nation’s defense until the war ended in 1945.
After World War II, Miriam attended Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, W.Va., where she met and married Robert Evan Hopkins on June 28, 1947.
She was active in several churches as a pastor’s wife. She was proud to be the mother of five children who all graduated from college. When the family moved to Hubbard, Miriam became an active member of First Baptist Church. She deeply loved her church family and served on several boards and pastor selection committees, taught a women’s Bible study class for 20 years, was a longtime member of the Up and Going Class and served as chairwoman of the Missions Committee when she was 89 years old.
Miriam was an accomplished cook. She enjoyed traveling to visit family members; vacationing, including a trip to England and Scotland; daytrips and picnics at Mosquito Lake; hosting social gatherings; spending time with her grandchildren; and dining with friends.
In May 2024, Miriam was honored to receive a Congressional Gold Medal, awarded collectively to all of the women who served as “Rosie the Riveters” in recognition of their contributions to the defense of the United States during World War II.
Burial, along with her late husband’s ashes, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 21, in the McClung Family Cemetery in Reedy, W.Va.
A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at First Baptist Church of Hubbard, with the family receiving friends 2 to 4 p.m.
