Kathy J. McPhee 1951-2026

CANFIELD — Kathy Jo McPhee, 75, passed away early Saturday morning, Feb. 28, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital after a prolonged illness, with her beloved daughter, Callie Hartman, by her side. She was cared for throughout her 14-month illness by her daughter, Callie, son, Joel Hartman, and partner of 20 years, Frank Thomas.

She was born Jan. 7, 1951, in Youngstown, the youngest child of Harold James and Mary Ruth Blunt McPhee.

Kathy Jo was raised and remained a lifetime resident of Canfield, where she was a fixture in the community. Known for her kindness to everyone, she lived her life ensuring those less fortunate or those in need were taken care of. Whether offering housing to struggling teenagers, food for the needy or a home for homeless pets, Kathy Jo was a champion for the underdog and unrelenting advocate for all.

She was a 1969 graduate of Canfield High School.

After high school, she relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland, where she graduated from Lear Siegler Institute of Fashion Merchandising.

She remained in Silver Spring, where she was employed as a dental assistant until the untimely death of her brother, Randy, when she returned to Canfield to be closer to her parents.

After returning to Canfield, Kathy Jo was employed as a bus driver with the Canfield Local School District for 35 years. During this time, she became a safe haven for many young people she would go on to establish lifetime friendships with. In addition, Kathy cared for her parents in their later years in her home.

Upon retirement, she became a caregiver, helping her clients with daily living, medical appointments and companionship. Above all, she shared her passion for life and humor with them.

She was madly in love with her partner, Frank, and enjoyed her golden years alongside him. She was a devoted mother who loved her children unconditionally … (we love you more!)

Kathy Jo was a dreamer who loved adventure and storytelling. She lived her life boldly and unapologetically. She was a friend to everyone.

Kathy Jo was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Harold and Mary Ruth McPhee; her brothers, Randy and Harry James McPhee; and a nephew, Chet McPhee.

She is survived by her beloved children, daughter Callie Hartman (fiance, Sean “Charlie” Hall) and son Joel Hartman; their father, Tom Hartman; her lifetime partner, Frank Thomas; and her bonus grandson, Isaac Hall. She is also survived by a niece, Dr. Michele (Nathan) Davidson of Cape Charles, Virginia. She leaves behind several great-nieces and -nephews, many beloved cousins and countless lifelong friends. She will be missed by her close and loyal friends, Cindy Murdoch, Rosemary Lanterman, Kathy Naypaver, Pamela Pinchuk, Patricia Bruce, Donna Cleghorn and Lynette Fumi.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jon Arnott, Dr. Winsor Chen, nurse Marilyn Graff and the Canfield Police, Fire and Emergency Services Dept. for their guidance, compassion and support during Kathy’s illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that you do as Kathy Jo: be generous with your time, be a friend to everyone and have the time of your life.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, there will be no funeral services or calling hours. A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held in late spring. Details will be shared by family when planned.

Arrangements for Kathy were provided by the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel, 65 N. Broad St., Canfield. This obituary may be viewed and condolences can be sent by visiting www.lanefuneralhomes.com.
