Josephine C. Bakes 1940-2026

GIRARD — Josephine C. Bakes, 85, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 5, 2026, at Shepherd of the Valley Liberty, surrounded by the love of her family.

Josephine was born June 13, 1940, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John B. Cappella and Rose M. Schettino Cappella, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1958 graduate of Girard High School and later attended Youngstown College, where she earned an associate’s degree in business.

Josie worked as the clerical manager of radiology at Northside Hospital for more than 30 years before retiring.

Mrs. Bakes was a member of St. Rose Church. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and became especially known for the beautiful wedding cakes she lovingly created for many family members through the years. Josie’s home was always the gathering place for holidays, as she deeply loved her family and took great joy in hosting festive celebrations. Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Josephine leaves to forever cherish her memory, her son, Andrew (Bonnie) Bakes of Girard; her daughter, Andrea Beil of Liberty Township; three grandchildren, twins, Brandon Bakes of Girard and Melanie (Ryan) Sanders of Cortland, and Catlin (David) Kalman of Boardman; three great-grandchildren, Jack, Ford and Luke Kalman; her sister-in-law, Joann Chagnot of Poland; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Her husband of 55 years, Leo G. Bakes, whom she married May 18, 1963, passed away March 13, 2019. A sister, Angelina DelGenio; and five brothers, Frank, John, Angelo, Sam and Tom DelGenio, also preceded Josie in death.

Family and friends may call from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 222 S. State St., Girard.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at the funeral home and continue with a Mass of Christian Burial, that will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St., Girard.

Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, where Josephine will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
