James W. Dunn Sr. 1930-2026

CANFIELD — James W. Dunn Sr., 96, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 15, 2026, at his daughter’s residence.

James was born Jan. 7, 1930, in Youngstown, a son of the late James P. and Mildred Vahey Dunn, and was a lifelong area resident.

He graduated from Niles McKinley High School and was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

Following his discharge from the Army, he attended Youngstown College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

Jim worked as an advertising executive for the former Wean United for 30 years, retiring in 1985.

In his spare time, Jim enjoyed crossword puzzles, bowling, golfing, playing cribbage and fishing. He also enjoyed camping trips to Cook Forest and Tionesta.

He was a member of the Irish Archival Society and, along with his wife, managed the Irish booth in the International Building at the Canfield Fair. Jim was very proud of his Irish heritage and served as one of the main editors of the book “Irish America in Youngstown.” He was also the writer and editor of the monthly Irish newsletter, The Harp. Most importantly, Jim cherished the time he spent with his family.

His wife, the former Shirley Ann Allen, whom he married June 21, 1952, passed away Feb. 23, 2008.

Jim is survived by his children, Shirley Ann “Shan” Dunn of Canfield, Richard (Janice) Dunn of Austintown, James (Jill) Dunn Jr. of Austintown and Barbara (Jim) Lowe of Youngstown; and his son-in-law, Jeff Brown of Niles. He also leaves 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Dunn Brown; a son, Robert Dunn; a brother, Richard Dunn; and two sisters, Margaret “Peg” Powers and Patricia Fagnano.

Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel.

A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at St. Michael Roman Catholic Parish in Canfield.
