Jacquelyn C. Carter 1940-2026
COLUMBUS — Jacquelyn C. Suber Carter, 86, departed this life at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at her residence, following complications from an extended illness.
She was born Jan. 14, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Lark and Helen Boatwright Suber, coming to the Struthers-Youngstown area as a child and living the last few years in Columbus with her son.
She was employed with the Youngstown City School System for 27 years as a teacher before retiring in 1993. She supervised student teachers at Youngstown State University from 2000 to 2005, was a supervisor for the adult basic literacy education from 1994 to 2000 and was a teacher for the Cleveland City Schools System from 1968 to 1975.
She graduated in 1957 from The Rayen School; in 1963 from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education; and in 1971 from the University of Pittsburgh with a Master’s degree in education and a minor in language arts.
She was a member of McGuffey Road Church of Christ, where she was a teacher; a former member of the Eastside Neighborhood Improvement Association; one of the founders of Women Hand In Hand; East High Community Organization; and People Are Hurting Foundation; and volunteered at the John Knox Presbyterian Church as a tutor, teaching math and reading.
She enjoyed flower gardening and reading.
She married John Alexander Carter on Oct. 17, 1964; he died Nov. 17, 2016.
Left to mourn Jacquelyn are one son, Mark (Sebrena) Carter of Columbus; one daughter, Ms. Michelle Carter of Youngstown; one stepson, John (Soriyah) Carter Jr. of New York; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Marie (Ronnie) Williams of Webster, New York; a brother-in-law, Jesse Carter Sr. of Youngstown; 10 grandchildren, Chonn Williams, Miss Toni Williams, Miss Alexis Carter, Alex Carter, Markquise Carter, Miss Maressa Carter, Darius Honeycutt, Marquise Taylor, Miss Teaira Ridgeway and Devante Carter; three great-grandchildren, Mrs. Nia (Robert) Holmes, Jaden Terrell and Maurise Kerns Jr.; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Thomas and Lark Suber Jr.; one grandson, Maurise Kerns Sr.; one great-granddaughter, Phoofa Carter; and sister-in-law, Romelia Carter.
Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Sterling-McCullough Williams Youngstown Funeral Chapel, with calling hours 11 a.m. to noon.
Burial will take place in Belmont Park Cemetery.
Arrangements of comfort were handled by Sterling-McCullough Williams Youngstown Funeral Home.
