Gary T. Carter 1961-2026

ATHENS, Tenn. — Gary Tyrone Carter, 65, departed this life at 9:33 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Erlanger Hospital, following complications of a short illness.

He was born March 4, 1961, in Youngstown, a son of Austine Carter and Dorothy Smith Coleman, residing in the area for 13 years, coming from Youngstown. He was a 1980 graduate of South High School.

Gary was employed as a machine operator at Creative Foam Corporation for three years before retiring in 2025. He also worked as a landscaper at Mill Creek Park and as a spray gun operator at Spectrum Metal Finishing Inc.

He enjoyed being a comedian and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

He leaves to mourn two sons, Gary Tyrell McElroy and Anfeny Carter, both of Youngstown; two brothers, Melvin Smith and Robert Carmichael, both of Knoxville, Tennessee.; two sisters, Ms. Vanessa Blackshear and Ms. Stacey Coleman, both of Youngstown; four grandchildren; longtime companion, Ms. Carolyn “Sissy” Jones of Athens, Tennessee; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Carter and Willie Earl Carter; and one sister, Sharon Coleman.

Funeral services will begin at noon Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Sterling-McCullough Williams Youngstown Funeral Chapel, with calling hours 11 a.m. to noon.

Burial will take place in Tod Homestead Cemetery.

Arrangements of comfort were handled by the Sterling-McCullough Williams Youngstown Funeral Home.
