Ernest L. Johnson 1952-2026
CAMPBELL — Ernest Lee Johnson, 73, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the Cleveland Clinic, surrounded by his loving family.
Ernest was born April 4, 1952, in Chillicothe, the son of the late Ernest Johnson Jr. and Flora L. Hallett Johnson. He graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1971 and went on to attend Texas A&M University. He later continued his education at ITT New Castle School of Trades in Pennsylvania.
A proud and dedicated serviceman, Ernest devoted his career to the United States Air Force, where he served as an aircraft mechanic. Through years of commitment and service, he rose to the rank of master sergeant before retiring.
Ernest was an active member of Hubbard VFW Post 3767 and the Vietnam Veterans Legacy Motorcycle Club. He had a passion for cars and was a member of the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), where he enjoyed drag racing his 1967 Chevy Chevelle and proudly showcasing his 1968 Chevy Chevelle at local car shows. In addition to his love of automobiles, he enjoyed bowling and participated in several leagues at Holiday Bowl in Struthers.
Above all, Ernest was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
Ernest is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Joyce A. Barrows Johnson, whom he married June 20, 1992; his five children, Jessica Johnson of Chillicothe, Amanda (Amber) Willis of Boardman, Jeremey (Katie) Barrows of Chillicothe, Nicole Brooks of Canfield and Brandy (Richard) McQuirt of Chillicothe; his five grandchildren, Avyana Barrows, Xyla Barrows, Hendrix Barrows, Khloe Brooks and Cody Miller; his brother, Thomas Johnson of Chillicothe; and his sisters, Patty Kerns and Cathy (Paul) Holloway, both of Chillicothe.
In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Nancy Barrows; a sister-in-law, Carol Johnson; and a brother-in-law, John Kerns.
Family and friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2026, at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland.
Full military honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
