Anthony J. Carsone Sr. 1936-2026

HUBBARD — Anthony Joseph “Tony” Carsone Sr. passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

He was born July 10, 1936, in Youngstown, to Joseph and Dora Carsone.

A member of St. Dominic Church of Youngstown, Anthony graduated from St. Dominic’s parochial school in 1950 and Woodrow Wilson High School in 1954. After high school, Anthony attended Ohio Northern University, where he played football and graduated with his degree in education in 1959. In 1965, Anthony graduated from Westminster College with his master’s degree in education, and in 1968, graduated from Youngstown State University with his master’s degree in special education.

Anthony was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He married Patricia Pascarella in 1958 and has two children, Anthony (Penny) Carsone and Julianne (John Bolek) Carsone; two granddaughters, Dr. Blair (Phillip Balland) Carsone and Dr. Bryce (Dr. Michael) Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Luca, Gemma and Juliet.

Anthony’s education career started in 1960 in the Hubbard schools, where he taught physical education, biology and students with disabilities. In 1971, Anthony went on to work at the Trumbull County Educational Service Center, where he served as a work-study coordinator and special education supervisor. Anthony, along with his colleagues, created many programs for students with special needs in Trumbull County.

Professionally, Anthony was a member of the Council for Exceptional Children and he served as secretary to the Ohio Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children. During his time as an educator, Anthony was recognized by his peers with many awards. Anthony was awarded the Outstanding Supervisor Award for the Ohio Association of Supervisors and Work Study Coordinators. Anthony was a charter member of the Ohio Association of Supervisors Work Study Coordinators since 1991. In 2010, Anthony completed a 50-year career in education — something he was very proud of!

Anthony was also proud of his coaching career at Hubbard High School. Anthony served as head football coach in 1967; assistant football coach, 1960-1966; track and field coach, 1960-1971; and cross-country coach, 1968-1971. Carsone was part of the coaching staff on the 1966 varsity football team that won the Steel Valley Championship. Carsone’s track and field teams finished second in the Steel Valley, and his teams set nine school records during his tenure as track and field coach. He had two track and field athletes make it to regionals (Bill Skruck for the half-mile and Jim Rigby for shot put) and one track and field athlete (Jim Rigby, shot put) who participated in the state meet.

Carsone was credited with starting the cross-country program at Hubbard High School, and he had one cross-country athlete (Dan Benton) make it to the state meet two consecutive years.

In 1967, Carsone began the indoor track program with meets at the University of Pittsburgh and in North Park. Carsone was also a coach for the Saturday Basketball Program — coaching third graders the fundamentals of basketball.

Anthony was inducted into the Hubbard High School All-Sports Hall of Fame, an honor he shares with his son, and in October 2025, Anthony was inducted into the Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame.

Within the community, Anthony was involved with Knights of Columbus beginning in 1961. Anthony was also very active with the Kiwanis Club of Hubbard, serving as president in 1976. Anthony served on the Hubbard Community Fund Board of Directors and was a member of the United Way. Anthony continued to give back to the Hubbard Community whenever called on.

During his teaching and coaching career, Anthony made a positive impact on many of his students and student athletes. Over the years, Anthony’s students and student athletes kept in touch with him and they enjoyed reminiscing about the “good ol’ days.”

Anthony also spent 17 years working part-time at the Coca-Cola bottling company and seven years as director of education at Belmont Pines Hospital. While spending winter in Florida, Anthony continued to work as a substitute teacher and a voting poll worker.

Anthony was a very active and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Anthony was an avid Hubbard fan and Cleveland fan! Anthony was also a very giving person who helped people in any way he could.

Anthony will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

The Carsone family would like to thank Patriot Hospice for the care and compassion they gave to Tony and to the wonderful caregivers we had over the years and to our friends and neighbors who helped on a moment’s notice — you are all so appreciated.

Anthony’s wife, Patricia, and his parents preceded him in death.
