Thomas A. Hephner 1936-2026
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — Dr. Thomas “Tom” Hephner, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2026, in Midlothian, Virginia. A lifelong educator, devoted family man, and passionate gardener, he will be missed by all who knew him.
Born in 1936, in Salem, Tom was the son of Henry Hephner and Margaret Larkins Hephner.
His early years in Ohio laid the foundation for a life dedicated to learning and service. He earned his first bachelor’s degree at Kent State University, then served six years in the United States Air Force Reserves. He pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. in vocational education at The Ohio State University — an institution he remained deeply connected to throughout his life as an avid Buckeye fan.
His professional journey led him to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he served as a professor of vocational education and director of continuing education.
In retirement Tom embraced his lifelong love of gardening by earning a Master Gardener certification and volunteering at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, Virginia.
Tom’s wife, Marjorie Brown Hephner, preceded him in death 10 years ago.
His family will miss him very much, including son, Bob Hephner and his wife, Lisa; daughter, Patti Hephner Perdue and her husband, Robbie; and son, Rich Hephner and his wife, Michele. Tom also leaves behind grandchildren, Brandon, Jackson, Madison and Avery; and great-granddaughter Blakely; his brother, Bob Hephner, and wife, Karen, along with their family.
A memorial service will be held on June 27, 2026, at Lisbon Cemetery in Ohio. Details to be determined closer to the date.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, in Tom’s memory.
