Stella Vassilaros 1931-2026
PITTSBURGH — Stella Vassilaros, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, at Fair Oaks Senior Living.
She loved for her family to be feasting and meeting often, for things to be done well, and for her history to be known and remembered. An archivist, in fact, as well as in her memory, she had a sharp mind and astounding recall for everyone in her large social circle.
Born March 4, 1931, in Youngstown, love and life brought her to Pittsburgh. She was an active member of the Ikarian community all her life, through which she met her husband, George Vassilaros. Stella and George shared 63 happy years of marriage, where they enjoyed traveling, especially to their home in Ikaria, Greece.
Stella received her master’s degree in special education from the University of Pittsburgh and worked at the Pioneer Education Center in Pittsburgh.
She was a member of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood and PittCon and an active congregant of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
She is survived by her two sons, George (Maria) Vassilaros and Leonidas (Maria) Vassilaros; her four grandchildren, Matina Vassilaros, Tia (Christian) Klay, George (Mary) Vassilaros and Sam (Alexa) Vassilaros; and her three great-grandchildren, Leo, Silas and Jack.
She was a lover of opera, cooking shows and photography. She always had a camera in her hand. Stella was a generous and welcoming hostess and a confident woman who voiced her opinions. She will be missed. May her memory be eternal.
