Shirley J. Hale 1932-2026

YOUNGSTOWN — Shirley Jean Hale, 93, a lifelong resident of Youngstown, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026, at her home.

Shirley was born April 26, 1932, to Lorn and Mellsinda Kelly Green. She was one of five children. Her brother, Bud; and sisters, Maxine and Nancy, have gone to be with the Lord.

Shirley married the love of her life, Jim Hale, on April 27, 1951. They were married 72 years until Jim’s passing in 2023.

Shirley was a delightful spitfire of a woman and a force to be reckoned with. Pictures were to be level and all cords hidden; I am happy to say all of her children and grandchildren have inherited this penchant for neatness and it has been the source of much laughter and fun.

Shirley greatly enjoyed traveling, gardening, crafting, reading, and especially time spent with her family. There were many, many family get-togethers at her home over the years that were filled with laughter and love. She made everyone feel at home and extended that love to each newcomer to our family.

Shirley was the essence of a life well lived, and we are beyond grateful for the 93 years the Lord blessed us with this incredible woman. She lived her lifelong faith with a fearless determination, which made her strong beyond words. She instilled that indomitable strength in each of her four children; her son, Gary Hale; daughter, Sandy (Jon) Ulicney; daughter, Terry (John) Chappell; and daughter, Barbara (Rob) Ivey, who all had the honor of caring for her in her last days.

She was “Grandma” to seven treasured grandchildren; “Gigi” to her eight beloved great-grandchildren; “Aunt Shirley” to many treasured nieces and nephews; “Shirl” to her beloved brother, Richard Green; and a good friend to many.

In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to Canfield Operation Blessing or Mahoning County Rescue Mission.
