Marsha J. Porter 1952-2026

BOARDMAN — Marsha J. Porter passed away on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026.

She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and from an early age showed remarkable intelligence and talent. As a teenager, she competed in the Colorado State Piano Championship, already demonstrating the musical gifts that would become a lifelong blessing to those around her. Her family fondly remembers the many hours she spent at the piano, filling their home with music.

After moving to Palmdale, Marsha shared her talents by accompanying the Palmdale High School choir. She later attended California State University, Long Beach, where she earned her teaching degree cum laude.

Marsha began her career teaching elementary school in Palmdale before moving to Fillmore, where she taught multiple grade levels. Her leadership abilities led her into administration, serving as both assistant principal and principal in Fillmore and Santa Paula. She was known for her firm but caring presence, her ability to switch seamlessly between English and Spanish when addressing students, and — most importantly — her deep belief in the potential of every child. Many former students credit her mentorship and office conversations with helping turn their lives around.

Music remained central to Marsha’s life. She sang in the Bardsdale church choir, played piano for services and eventually became choir director, lovingly leading many Vespers services.

Marsha was a devoted mother who made learning and exploration part of family life. She took her children on many trips to historical sites and national parks, often with bird and flower guides in hand, teaching them to notice and appreciate the world around them. She was present for every dance recital and sporting event, always showing up with encouragement and pride.

Later in life, she cherished her role as a grandmother. She loved singing, reading, dancing and truly savoring every moment spent with her grandbabies.

Marsha will be especially remembered for her quick wit, sharp sense of humor and her ability to find laughter in life’s everyday moments. Her love, guidance and presence left a lasting impact on her family, students and community.

Marsha is survived by her children, Megan (Eli) and Jeff (Christina); and her beloved grandchildren Brynn, June, Brock and Isaac.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Bardsdale United Methodist Church, 1498 Bardsdale Ave., Fillmore, CA 93015.

Her family plans to establish a scholarship fund in her memory, with more information to be shared at the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family graciously welcomes support and donations to the scholarship fund.

Professional arrangements are being handled by Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
