Ludwig J. Gonia 1946-2026
VIENNA — Ludwig J. Gonia, 80, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, at University Hospital Geauga Medical Center in Chardon.
Ludwig was born Jan. 17, 1946, in Germany, a son of Kazmierz and Klara Borowik Gonia.
He was a 1965 graduate of Howland High School.
For 40 years, he was a steelworker at Republic Steel in Warren, which later became WCI, and retired in 2001.
Ludwig enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, doing yard work, having a cup of coffee, and most of all, loved spending time with his grandkids.
He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Vienna.
Ludwig was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War.
Ludwig will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family, including his wife, the former Ruth A. Patterson, whom he married April 20, 1968; his son, Scott (Leah) Gonia of Mentor; his daughter, Mary (Anthony) Glauser of Chardon; and five grandchildren, Alex, David, Will, Izzy and Toby.
His parents preceded him in death.
A prayer service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, at Kyle Funeral Homes Vienna Chapel, 4473 Warren Sharon Road, Vienna.
Ludwig will be laid to rest in All Souls Cemetery.
